Chennai Train Accident: Over 10 Injured as Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express Collides with Stationary Goods Train at Kavaraipettai Station

At least 10 people were injured when the 12578 Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a stationary goods train at Kavaraipettai railway station in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district on Friday. The accident took place around 8:30 p.m. on October 11, impacting the Chennai-Gudur section between Ponneri and Kavaraipettai.

Drone footage from the site has captured the full scale of the destruction caused by the collision, showing mangled train coaches and debris scattered across the railway tracks.

In response to the Chennai train accident, the Railway Safety Commissioner of the Southern Circle, Anant Madhukar Chowdhary, conducted an on-site inspection on Saturday to assess the damage and gather details on the incident.

Rahul Gandhi and Udhayanidhi Stalin Demand Action

Rahul Gandhi expressed his outrage on X (formerly Twitter), comparing the accident to the catastrophic Balasore train disaster. He stated, “The Mysuru-Darbhanga train accident mirrors the horrific Balasore tragedy. Despite numerous accidents, no lessons are learned. Accountability starts at the top. How many more families must be destroyed before this government wakes up?”

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited the injured passengers at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai. During his visit, he urged the Union government to implement stronger measures to prevent such tragedies. He remarked, “These train accidents are becoming a series of avoidable events. It’s time the central government steps up and addresses this critical issue.”

Southern Railway’s Response

Following the accident, Southern Railway swiftly organized emergency transport for passengers. Two EMU special trains were arranged to transport passengers from Ponneri to Chennai Central after an initial bus ride. Passengers stranded by the accident were safely brought to their destination by a special train on Saturday, as confirmed by Southern Railway officials.
