Haryana, J&K Assembly Election Results Updates: The ruling BJP has crossed the majority mark in Haryana, leading with 49 seats, while Congress trails with 36 in what has turned into a major upset for the Grand Old Party. Despite early trends showing Congress poised for a comeback after 10 years, the tides shifted in favor of the BJP as more rounds of counting progressed.

Several exit polls had forecasted a Congress victory in Haryana, where voter turnout was recorded at 67.90%. Congress workers, initially celebrating at the party headquarters as postal ballots were counted, went quiet as BJP gained momentum. However, senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja remained optimistic, urging caution against drawing conclusions from early trends.

The Congress lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission over an alleged delay in uploading results on the official website. “Such delays allow bad-faith actors to create narratives that undermine the electoral process, which is already visible on social media. Our concern is that these narratives could influence ongoing counting in most centers,” wrote senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh in his letter.

In the 2019 Haryana assembly elections, the BJP won 40 seats, Congress secured 31, and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) took 10. The BJP formed a government with JJP’s support, making Dushyant Chautala the deputy chief minister. However, the alliance ended when Saini became the chief minister.

For the BJP, retaining power in Haryana is key for its image as the party aims to surpass its Lok Sabha performance, where it won five out of ten seats after a clean sweep in 2019.

JAMMU & KASHMIR
Trends in Jammu and Kashmir are favoring the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance in the first elections held since 2014 and after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. According to the Election Commission, the NC is leading in 41 seats, while its ally Congress is ahead in 10.

NC vice-president Omar Abdullah, commenting on the trends, emphasized the need for transparency in the electoral process. “There should be no manipulation of the people’s mandate in Jammu and Kashmir. If the mandate is against the BJP, the party should not resort to any ‘jugaad’ or underhand tactics,” Abdullah told reporters.

Among the prominent leaders currently leading are Omar Abdullah, Pradesh Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra, AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, CPI(M) leader M.Y. Tarigami, and BJP’s former ministers Sham Lal Sharma and Devender Singh Rana.

The vote counting for the 90 seats of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, which were contested in three phases, began at 8 a.m. across 28 counting centers.
