A viral post by a Jaipur man on the rising school fees has resonated with thousands of parents. In his now widely shared post, Rishabh Jain highlighted that a reputable school in the city is charging over ₹4 lakh in annual fees for a Class 1 student. He pointed out that this exorbitant fee is not an isolated case but reflects the pricing of other top schools in the Rajasthan capital.
Rishabh Jain shared his frustration over the soaring cost of education while trying to enroll his daughter in a school. In a passionate post on X, the IIT Bombay graduate and entrepreneur expressed his belief that quality education has become a luxury beyond the reach of the middle class.
Jain’s post, which has since been viewed over 1.5 million times, sheds light on the unaffordability of education in India. “My daughter will start Grade 1 next year, and this is the fee structure of one of the schools we are considering in our city. Other good schools have similar fees,” he wrote, attaching a detailed breakdown that revealed parents would need to pay ₹4.27 lakh annually for their child’s education.
The IITian emphasized that even individuals earning ₹20 lakh per year would struggle to afford such fees, as a large portion of their income would go toward taxes and essential expenses like food and clothing.

“With an income of ₹20 lakh, you’re in the top 30%+ CESS tax bracket, which means you don’t qualify for government schemes or receive any freebies or loan waivers like the wealthy do. In the remaining ₹10 lakh, you’re left with a choice: either cover your basic expenses like food, clothing, rent, and EMIs, or pay the school fees for your two kids,” Jain explained.
Parents React
The post sparked a divided reaction on social media, with many parents agreeing with Jain and condemning the rising cost of education as “outrageous.” However, some felt that Jain had overstated the issue, particularly his claim that people earning ₹20 lakh a year could not afford ₹4 lakh in annual school fees.
“Bro, it feels like you’re exaggerating the numbers! And you’ve purposefully picked the most expensive school in your city to make your point,” commented one X user. Jain responded, saying, “It may seem like I’m exaggerating, but trust me, I’m not. Get married and settle in a big city to experience it for yourself.”
“I always tell people to consider the money spent on quality education as part of their taxes, because in most high-tax countries, paying taxes often covers both quality education and sometimes healthcare as well,” remarked another X user.
