Some of India’s top cricketing talents are poised to enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction pool and will likely forgo the opportunity to be retained by their franchises ahead of the 2025 IPL mega auction. This decision comes in light of a significant rule change implemented by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
According to a report from Sportstar and The Hindu, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer, Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant, star spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and Punjab Kings’ fast bowler Arshdeep Singh are all expected to be part of the auction rather than being retained by their respective franchises.

The report indicates that starting with the 2025 season, the actual retention value of a player will be deducted from the franchise’s salary cap. In previous seasons, if a player’s retention price exceeded the designated slot value, the lower amount was subtracted from the salary cap. However, under the new rules, if the retention amount surpasses the salary cap, the higher of the two amounts will be deducted.
This change makes it challenging for teams to offer higher salaries than the slot values of ₹18 crore, ₹14 crore, and ₹11 crore, prompting top players to consider entering the auction instead.
Despite these complexities, the report states that the Mumbai Indians (MI) have reached an agreement to retain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) plans to retain Heinrich Klaasen for ₹23 crore, resulting in an additional ₹5 crore deduction from their salary cap.
All ten IPL franchises must submit their lists of retained players by October 31. The 2025 mega auction is set to take place in the last week of November, with the specific date and venue yet to be officially confirmed. An international city is expected to host the mega event.
