Rail passengers faced significant inconvenience on Thursday morning as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and mobile app experienced a major outage. The disruption left travelers unable to book Tatkal tickets during the critical 10 AM booking window.
Users reported encountering an error message stating, “Unable to perform action due to maintenance activity,” when attempting to access the platform. IRCTC assured users that their IT team is actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
IRCTC clarified that the outage was caused by ongoing maintenance activities. “Due to maintenance activity, e-ticketing services will not be available. Please try later,” the corporation stated.
As the digital arm of Indian Railways, IRCTC facilitates e-ticket bookings through its website, mobile apps, and SMS services.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, IRCTC advised passengers needing to cancel their tickets to contact customer care or email their ticket details to obtain a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
IRCTC provided the following contact details for ticket cancellation assistance:
Customer Care Numbers: 14646, 08044647999, 08035734999
Email: [email protected]

A report by Times of India highlighted allegations from passengers claiming possible manipulation of the booking system. Several users reported that once services resumed, only premium-priced tickets were available, often at double the standard rates, according to the publication.
“When the system resumes, all Tatkal tickets are already booked, but only premium tickets at double the price are available,” a user reportedly told Times of India. The user tagged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Prime Minister’s Office on X while voicing the complaint.
This is the second instance of a disruption on the Railways’ e-portal in December, sparking concerns among regular users.
