Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has recently stirred controversy with his Tamil-Kannada remark during the promotion of his upcoming film Thug Life. Following the backlash, the film was banned in Karnataka. Now, Karnataka Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi has indicated that all of the actor’s films could face a statewide ban.
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has announced that if Kamal Haasan does not apologise for his controversial remark suggesting that “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” all his films will be banned in the state. KFCC President M. Narasimhalu stated that theatre owners and distributors have independently decided not to screen the veteran actor’s movies unless he issues a public apology.
Karnataka Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi supported the KFCC’s stance, saying, “I have written a letter. After that, the Film Chamber of Commerce also made a good decision and held a press conference yesterday, stating that if he doesn’t apologise within two days, his films will be banned.”
The minister further asserted that Kamal Haasan must apologise, stating that they would not permit the screening of his films if he failed to do so. He emphasised that any derogatory remark against the Kannada language would not be tolerated and warned that a firm decision would be taken if an apology was not issued.
When asked directly whether Haasan’s films would be banned in the absence of an apology, Shivaraj Tangadagi responded unequivocally, “Yes.”
