BENGALURU: On Friday, Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), alleged that the BJP is targeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the MUDA case to undermine Congress. He clarified that the party must continue to move forward, regardless of Siddaramaiah’s position as CM.
Just hours before the Lokayukta police filed an FIR against Siddaramaiah, Kharge came to the Chief Minister’s defense, stating that Siddaramaiah should not resign since no charges have been substantiated in the MUDA case.
A Special Court judge remarked that the “needle of suspicion points towards CM Siddaramaiah” regarding the MUDA controversy. Kharge added, “When the Godhra incident occurred, did Prime Minister Narendra Modi resign? At that time, numerous cases were also pending against Amit Shah. We must not target an individual to tarnish their image. The goal here is to damage Congress, not just one person. Siddaramaiah may or may not remain in his position as CM, but the party will persist. The BJP has conspired to undermine Congress and its voter base.”
He concluded by saying, “Let the law take its course. We will assess the situation when necessary. Currently, there are no accusations against Siddaramaiah. I’m tired of the opposition bringing up the MUDA issue every single day.”
BJP in Karnataka has staged protests calling for CM Siddaramaiah’s resignation, arguing that the MUDA issue is trivial compared to the BJP government’s decision to write off ₹16 lakh crore in debts owed by a few industrialists. “While crores are being siphoned off by industrialists, the BJP is fixated on a minor issue. There has been no chargesheet filed against Siddaramaiah, nor has he been convicted,” he stated.
When asked if the party high command would continue to support Siddaramaiah even if an FIR were filed against him, Kharge responded that it was a hypothetical question. He emphasized that the party stands by Siddaramaiah, not just as an individual, but as a representative of the party. “We are backing him because he represents the party, not merely as an individual,” he clarified.
In response to Prime Minister Modi’s accusation that the Congress government in Karnataka has misappropriated grants intended for Dalits, Kharge remarked that he would address Modi’s claims only during the Haryana Assembly election campaign.
