Noel Tata Takes the Helm: Decoding the Ownership Structure of Tata Group’s $365 Billion Empire

Tata Group: Putting an end to speculation about the next successor following the passing of Ratan Tata, Tata Trusts has appointed Noel Tata, his half-brother, as the new chairman. The appointment was confirmed during a meeting held today in Mumbai.

Ratan Naval Tata passed away late Wednesday night, October 9, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been admitted in critical condition.

Ratan Tata led the Tata Group as Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the vast Tata empire, from 1991 until his retirement on December 28, 2012. After stepping down, he was honored with the title of Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, as well as Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals.

The Tata Group is one of India’s largest family-owned conglomerates, with a presence across diverse sectors through independent companies. As of March 31, 2024, the group boasts a combined market capitalization exceeding $365 billion. It includes over 26 listed companies, such as IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Power, and Indian Hotels.

Tata Trusts holds the largest shareholding in Tata Sons, which oversees the $365 billion Tata empire.

Tata Trusts holds over 65.9% of the shares, followed by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group with 18.41%, Tata Group with 12.78%, and the Tata Family holding 2.84%.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust holds the largest stake at 28%, followed by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust with 23.6%. Sterling Investment Corporation and Cyrus Investment each hold 9.2%, while the JRD Tata Trust holds 4%. The Tata Education and Tata Social Welfare Trusts both have 3.7%, Tata Motors holds 3.1%, and the RD Tata Trust owns 2.2%.
