U.S. President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Wednesday, citing national security concerns as the reason for banning travel from several countries. The order imposes a complete entry ban on nationals from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
In addition to the full travel ban—set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday—the U.S. will impose heightened restrictions on visitors from seven other countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
“I must act to protect the national security and national interest of the United States and its people,” President Trump stated in the proclamation.

“President Trump is fulfilling his promise to protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors seeking to enter our country and do us harm,” said White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the White House, the countries subject to the full travel ban were deemed “deficient in screening and vetting procedures” and assessed to pose a “very high risk” to U.S. national security.
This move echoes Trump’s 2017 executive order during his first term, which barred citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries—Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen—from entering the United States.
