Jamshedpur boy scores 99.8%, becomes joint national topper in ICSE exam

Rushil Kumar of the Hill Top School here bagged the first rank with a score of 99.8% in the country along with eight others in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) 2023 examination (Class X), the result of which was declared on Sunday afternoon. Rushil scored a perfect 100 in all subjects – mathematics, science, computer, history and geography – except for English in which he was one mark short at 99.

Rushil said, “The marks I scored are somewhat on the expected lines. I could achieve it through disciplined self-study round the year and focused on preparations before the exam. The papers were scheduled with a gap of two to three days and hence, I got sufficient time to revise the study materials.” The national topper also said he used to watch news, events and educational programme for an hour daily even during the examination period.
Aiming to pursue electrical engineering from a leading IIT and later sit for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams, Rushil said his next goal is to score well in the JEE-2025.
The topper also appreciated his school teachers for clearing his doubts and helping him to prepare well for the examination in a disciplined manner. School principal Uma Tiwary lauded Rushil for his outstanding performance. Wishing him the best for the future, she said by becoming the national topper, Rushil has made the school proud.

The only child of his parents, Rushil said his father, Rajesh Kumar, is a construction business owner and his mother, Suman Devi, is a homemaker. The jubilant parents, who live at the Kailasnagar colony in Chota Govindpur on the outskirts of Steel City, said their son’s performance was expected.

Ranchi: Taking the academic competition to new levels, Jharkhand student Rushil Kumar of the Hill Top School, Jamshedpur, joined the national club of toppers in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) examination (Class X), securing 99.98% marks. Rushil is one among the nine candidates from across the country who scored the same marks and become joint toppers.
In addition, more than one dozen state students also set new standards of scoring high marks and rubbed shoulders in the 99% category. While all the three top rankers in the Class X final are from Steel City and scored above 99%, there are as many as 10 students from Ranchi in the 99% and above category. In Bokaro, one student also entered the 99% club and Dhanbad students missed the category by 0.2%.
In the India School Certificate (ISC) examination (Class XII), in the commerce stream, Isha Murarka of Loyola school scored 99.25% marks and followed by Srinjay Bannerjee of Carmel Junior College with 99% to join the 99 per centres’ club.
The results declared on Sunday said 97.41% of students passed the Class X exam conducted between February 27 and March 29, and 95.05% of candidates passed the Class XII examination conducted between February 13 and March 31. A total of 15,991 students took the Class X examination and 4,885 students sat for the Class XI examination. In the Class X exam, girls outperform the boys with a 98.26% pass rate compared to the boys’ 96.6% pass rate. Similarly, 96.81% of girls have passed the Class XII exam, compared to 93.33% of boys.
Steel City was in the limelight with Rushil’s 99.8%, followed by Kaushlendra Pratap scoring 99.4% and Priyanka Chakravarty scoring 99.2%, all from the Hill Top School.
In Ranchi, Trisha Salvi, a student of the Sacred Heart Convent School, Krrish Vatshal, of St Thomas School and Atharv Kumar of Bishop Westcott Boys School, scored 99.4% followed by Zoya Alam of the Sacred Heart with 99.2 % and five candidates – Anushka Mazumdar, Aryan Aditya, Kumar Rajyog, Sambhavi Kumari and Vaishnavi Swadha of St Thomas School – scored 99% marks.
