Top 10 Highest GST-Contributing States in India
The Goods and Services Tax (GST), launched on July 1, 2017, marked a major shift in India’s tax structure, aiming to unify and simplify the country’s indirect taxation system.
As per ClearTax, India’s total GST revenue for the financial year 2024 reached a record ₹21.36 lakh crore — the highest since the tax’s inception — reflecting an 8.86% growth over the previous year’s collection.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Finance, gross GST revenue collections in April 2025 stood at ₹2.36 lakh crore, marking a 12.6% year-on-year growth.
Maharashtra retained its position as the top GST contributor in both FY 2024 and April 2025. However, the state’s growth rate moderated to 11% in April 2025, down from 13% in the same month last year.
Gujarat emerged as a strong performer, surpassing several major GST-contributing states with a 13% year-on-year increase in April collections. The state recorded an all-time high GST revenue of ₹14,970 crore for April 2025. For the full financial year 2024–25, Gujarat’s total GST revenue stood at ₹1,74,938 crore, according to GST Council data accessed by Forbes.

In a remarkable development, Lakshadweep posted an extraordinary 287% surge in GST collections in April 2025. Among northeastern states, Arunachal Pradesh led with a 66% rise, followed by Meghalaya at 50% and Nagaland at 42%.
