Apple has agreed to a $95 million (approximately ₹790 crore) settlement in the U.S. following allegations that its voice assistant, Siri, recorded users’ private conversations without their consent. The settlement stems from a 2019 class-action lawsuit, which claimed Apple captured and shared sensitive audio recordings with third-party contractors for quality evaluation purposes.

The lawsuit alleged that Siri would occasionally activate unintentionally, leading to the recording of conversations never meant to be shared. At the time, reports highlighted that some of these recordings included sensitive personal details, such as private medical information and confidential discussions.

While Apple has denied any misconduct, it opted to settle the case out of court. The company emphasized that Siri was designed with user privacy as a core principle and reiterated that it never used recorded audio for marketing or sold it to third parties.

As part of the $95 million settlement, eligible U.S. users can now submit claims to receive compensation of up to $100 (roughly ₹8,500) per person. The final payout will depend on how many valid claims are filed and how many Apple devices each claimant used.

To be eligible, users must have interacted with Siri on any Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. This includes devices such as iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Watches, HomePods, iPod Touch, and Apple TV. However, only those who experienced Siri unintentionally activating during private conversations are qualified to file a claim.

Each eligible device can earn users up to $20, with a maximum of five devices per person — bringing the total potential payout to $100 (around ₹8,500). To receive the compensation, users must submit their claims by July 2, and the process must be completed through the official settlement website.

Those who qualify for the settlement would have already received a notice via email or postal mail, titled Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement.” However, even if you didn’t receive a notification, you can still file a claim. Just visit the official settlement portal and provide the required information to check your eligibility and complete the process.
