Tech billionaire Elon Musk, once a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, announced on Saturday the launch of a new political outfit called the ‘America Party‘. Musk said the move is intended to disrupt what he described as the nation’s “one-party system.”
The announcement came just a day after President Trump signed the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill,’ a sweeping piece of legislation that has stirred political debate across the country.
Elon Musk — the world’s richest man and a major donor to Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign — has officially broken ranks with the former president, following a highly publicized fallout. Musk, who briefly headed the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, had pushed aggressive reforms to slash federal spending and shrink the government workforce — moves that reportedly soured his relationship with Trump.
Announcing the launch of the ‘America Party’, Musk wrote in a post:
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party — and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”
His new political venture aims to directly challenge what he calls the entrenched establishment and restore fiscal accountability.
During the U.S. Independence Day celebrations on July 4, Elon Musk ignited political shockwaves by posting a provocative poll:
“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?”
The results were decisive — 65.4% voted “Yes”, while 34.6% voted “No.”
Tensions between Musk and President Donald Trump had already been escalating, particularly after Trump urged Republicans to rally behind his sweeping domestic agenda wrapped into the controversial “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Musk came out swinging against the legislation, branding it “debt slavery” and blasting GOP lawmakers who backed it despite their repeated promises of fiscal responsibility. He accused them of “hypocrisy” and vowed to challenge the political status quo by forming a new party.
The bill, which economists estimate will add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade, became a flashpoint in their deteriorating relationship.
In retaliation, Trump publicly lashed out at Musk, threatening to strip federal funding from his companies and even raising the prospect of deportation.
“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked by reporters whether he would consider deporting Musk, who immigrated from South Africa and became a U.S. citizen in 2002.
Following his dramatic split with Donald Trump, Elon Musk has doubled down on plans to launch a new political party — an idea that once seemed far-fetched for the South Africa-born tech mogul.
Earlier this month, Musk conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter), asking Americans whether they wanted an alternative to the traditional Republican-Democrat system. The response was overwhelming, with a clear majority voting in favor of a third political front.
Riding on that momentum, Musk formally proposed the name: “America Party” — a political force he says will stand against corruption, government waste, and the entrenched “uniparty” establishment.
