Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a phone conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing the need for immediate de-escalation and dialogue in light of the recent US strikes on Tehran’s nuclear facilities.
“Spoke with President of Iran @drpezeshkian. We had a detailed discussion on the prevailing situation. I expressed deep concern over the recent escalation,” PM Modi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian amid heightened tensions following US strikes on Tehran’s nuclear facilities. During the 45-minute conversation, PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent call for “immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy” as the only viable path toward restoring regional peace, security, and stability.
“The way forward is through dialogue and diplomacy. I reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation and early restoration of peace,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
President Pezeshkian, who initiated the call, briefed PM Modi on the evolving situation in detail. He described India as a friend and partner in promoting stability in the region and expressed appreciation for India’s balanced stance. He also echoed the need for de-escalation and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to diplomatic solutions.
The United States launched a major military strike on Saturday night, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The coordinated assault, carried out using B-2 stealth bombers and Tomahawk missiles, was hailed by President Donald Trump as a “spectacular military success.”
Speaking shortly after the strikes, Trump declared that Iran’s key nuclear enrichment sites had been “completely obliterated,” calling the mission a flawless operation and a decisive blow to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
In a late-night address to the nation, the President doubled down on his warning to Tehran: “There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than what we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left. If peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed, and skill.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s state television warned Trump that every American citizen or military personnel in West Asia was now a “target”, after the United States launched “successful” airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran – Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. “The US has committed a crime against Iran by violating Iran’s airspace. It has no place in the West Asian region. Mr. President of the United States, you started it and we will end it,” said the Iranian broadcaster, while displaying a graphic of US bases in the region.
India’s Stance on the Israel-Iran Conflict
On June 13, 2025, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the escalating situation and reports of attacks on nuclear facilities in the region. Urging restraint from both Israel and Iran, the MEA called for the use of existing diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions and resolve issues through dialogue.
Highlighting its longstanding and friendly relations with both nations, India reiterated its readiness to offer any support that could help restore peace and stability. The government emphasized that its immediate focus remains the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the region.
Indian missions in both Israel and Iran have been actively monitoring the situation and are in touch with local Indian communities. The Indian Embassy in Israel has issued a fresh advisory, urging citizens to exercise caution and adhere to all local security protocols.
The Embassy of India in Iran also posted an update on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“In view of the current situation in Iran, all Indian nationals & persons of Indian origin are requested to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement, follow the Embassy’s social media channels, and strictly observe safety instructions issued by local authorities.”
How the Conflict Can Impact India
India, which imports over 85% of its crude oil, remains highly vulnerable to disruptions in global energy supply and pricing—particularly from the Gulf region. Any military escalation, especially near strategic chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, risks spiking oil prices. This could widen India’s current account deficit and trigger imported inflation, affecting both government finances and household budgets.
Beyond energy concerns, the conflict places added pressure on India’s delicate diplomatic balance in West Asia. While India continues to strengthen strategic ties with Israel, it also depends on Iran for critical regional connectivity initiatives such as the Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). A prolonged crisis could jeopardize progress on both diplomatic and logistical fronts.
Perhaps most crucially, regional instability endangers the safety and livelihood of over nine million Indians living and working across the Gulf. For New Delhi, peace in West Asia is not only a foreign policy goal but a pressing domestic necessity.
