Cyclone Michaung LIVE Location: Cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ (pronounced as Migjaum), which formed over the Bay of Bengal and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, is likely to make landfall near Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla during the forenoon of Tuesday, December 5, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone has triggered heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with Chennai and its surrounding districts bearing the maximum brunt of it. So far, at least five people have died in rain-related incidents, while property with crores has been damaged. However, the rain subsided in Chennai on Tuesday.

IMD Wind Warning:

-Southwest Bay of Bengal along and off north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Coasts: Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is prevailing along and off north Tamil Nadu coast (Chennai and to its north).

It would decrease gradually becoming 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph by forenoon of December 5.

-Westcentral Bay of Bengal and along & off south Andhra Pradesh Coast: Gale wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph would prevail over westcentral Bay of Bengal around system centre till morning of December 5 and gradually decreases thereafter. Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph prevailing along and off Nellore district and 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph along and off remaining districts of south Andhra Pradesh coast till December 5 is likely to continue till forenoon and gradually decrease thereafter.

-Along and off north Andhra Pradesh Coast: Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is prevailing, it is likely to continue during next 12 hours. It would gradually decrease thereafter.

-Along and off Odisha Coast: Squally wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail till afternoon of December 5 and it is likely to gradually increase becoming 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph from December 5 evening for subsequent 12 hours. It would gradually decrease thereafter.

Cyclone Michaung: Rainfall Warning for Tamil Nady, AP, Odisha, Telangana

1. Rainfall Warning for North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall on December 5 and decrease thereafter.

2. Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Light to moderate rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on December 5.

“Exceptionally heavy” rainfall at one or two places is also likely over north coastal and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 5, IMD said.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6.

3. Rayalaseema: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall on December 5 and decrease thereafter.

4. Telangana: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on December 5.

5. Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over south Coastal and adjoining south Interior Odisha on December 5 and isolated heavy rainfall over the same region on December 6.

Chennai Rain: Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar Offers Support to Tamil Nadu

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said today that the state is ready to offer any support needed to Tamil Nadu, parts of which are receiving severe rain under the impact of Cyclone Michaung.

“Our thoughts are with the state of Tamil Nadu as they brave a cyclone that has brought life to standstill. In solidarity, we stand ready to offer any support needed. Stay safe and strong Chennai. Prayers for the safety of the people,” DK Shivakumar said in a post on X.

Residents in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh Evacuated Ahead of Michaung Landfall

Nearly 900 people residing in villages along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh have been evacuated to safety. With the severe cyclonic storm Michaung anticipated to hit Bapatla district within hours, residents have been advised against going outdoors.

Bapatla district superintendent of police Vakul Jindal told PTI that people living in thatched houses in the region have been evacuated. He said 21 cyclone shelters have been set up, even as 10 trees got uprooted and 12 bridges and culverts are overflowing in the district.

“As of now there is not much of a human impact. It is raining and a bit windy. We have cleared the uprooted trees and stopped vehicle movement at overflowing places. We are vigilant and we will see what happens and respond accordingly,” Jindal said.

Michaung LIVE: Foxconn, Pegatron, Hyundai Suspend Operations Due to Floods, Cyclonic Conditions in Chennai

iPhone vendors Foxconn and Pegatron, and automobile company Hyundai are among the companies that have suspended their manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu due to cyclonic conditions. Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc across Chennai and its neighbouring districts, inundating the city, causing disruptions in flights and trains, and startling residents with a video capturing a crocodile crossing a submerged road.

Sources said that several factories in and around Chennai have temporarily suspended operations. When contacted, a Hyundai Motor India spokesperson said, “Considering the safety and well-being of our employees under the prevailing cyclonic conditions in Chennai and surrounding districts, the factory operation (all shifts) at Hyundai Motor India Sriperumbudur facility has been suspended for today (December 4, 2023).” No comments were received from Foxconn and Pegatron. Foxconn and Pegatron are engaged in the manufacturing of iPhone. Pegatron had briefly suspended iPhone production in September after a minor fire accident.

According to IMD, as Cyclone Michaung, pronuounced Migjaum, nearly moves northwards close to Andhra Pradesh coast, some parts of the wall cloud region lies over land.

IMD said the system is likely to move nearly northwards parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla during forenoon today as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

“Rains have stopped, and water has receded. No water stagnation on runways and taxiways. However, a lot of slush/filth is found. Four CFTs are deployed for clearing the same, and manpower is also engaged in cleaning work. The Chennai Team confirmed that all CNS / ATM facilities r working normally, and they are going to withdraw the NOTAM. Hence, the airfield would be open from 0900hrs IST. Airlines and other stakeholders have been intimated for planning their operations accordingly. AAI would disseminate this information to the general public through social media. ATM would give priority for departures to clear the stranded passengers at the airport. There are 21 aircraft on the ground and around 1500 pax in the Terminals. On reaching north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, the system is likely to recurve and move in a northward direction and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast on December 5 as a severe cyclonic storm, the Met said.

The weather system will bring in its wake light rain in south Bengal districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipore, Jhargram, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly on December 6 and 7, it added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he was in constant touch with the governments of states on the eastern coast bracing for Cyclone Michaung to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. Modi also urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration.

“Cyclone Michaung can impact the eastern coastal regions. The central government is in constant touch with the state governments and helping them,” Modi said while addressing the victory celebrations at the BJP headquarters. “I urge BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha and especially Andhra Pradesh, the state government may be of any party, to join the relief and rescue efforts, and support the local administration,” the prime minister said.

He said he could not keep track of the election results as he was busy monitoring the cyclone situation on the country’s eastern coast. Earlier, Modi had spoken to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy to take stock of the preparations to handle Cyclone Michaung and assured him of all help, officials said.

Cyclone Michaung LIVE: IMD Forecast Offers Some Respite for Chennai With Predictions of Light Rainfall

North coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall in most places and isolated heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning, decreasing thereafter, according to the latest IMD bulletin.

The forecast of reduced rainfall intensity comes as a relief after Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc across Chennai and adjoining districts, causing flooding and disrupting normal life on Monday.

Residents in some parts of Chennai reported no rain since early hours on Tuesday and mentioned that power services had been restored in those areas. However, train services to and from the city remain suspended.
