After a prolonged wait of four years, the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup is coming back to enthrall sports fans. The showpiece event is being solely hosted in India this year for the first time in history. Earlier, when the tournament took place on Indian soil, the hosting rights were shared with other Asian countries. The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup is set to commence on 5 October, with the finalists of the last edition – England and New Zealand – going head-to-head in the inaugural clash. The final of the tournament is scheduled for 19 November and will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Format
The ODI World Cup will feature a total of 10 teams this year. Similar to the 2019 edition, the teams will face off each other once in a single round-robin format during the group stage. Two points will be awarded to the winning side. Based on the accumulated points, the top four teams on the table will advance to the semi-finals.
If two teams finish with the same points, their total wins will be considered, while net run rate will be the next tie-breaker. In the last World Cup, Pakistan and New Zealand both wrapped up the group stage with 11 points as well as with an equal number of victories (five). The Black Caps eventually found a place among the final four due to their superior net run rate. In the semi-finals, the table topper will clash against the fourth-placed team, while the second and third-place finishers will be vying to secure a berth in the final.
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualification Process
Being the hosts, India were handed a direct entry into the 2023 World Cup. The other seven teams earned qualification based on their standings in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. This is a three-year competition where a total of 13 teams compete in eight bilateral ODI series (three-match) each.
The top-seven teams – New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa – booked their ticket to the main event, while the bottom five later featured in the World Cup Qualifier. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands reached the final of the qualifying campaign. The Islander nation remained unbeaten throughout the tournament before notching up a resounding 128-run win over the Dutch unit in the final showdown.

The ICC event will be hosted across 10 venues in India, with Ahmedabad hosting the inaugural and the final fixtures.
