Former Indo-Canadian MP Ruby Dhalla has announced her candidacy for the leadership of the ruling Liberal Party, aiming to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She entered the race just before the January 23 deadline for candidate declarations. However, Dhalla’s campaign still needs to submit a qualifying fee of 350,000 Canadian dollars ($243,195).

Shortly after her announcement, Ruby Dhalla pledged to deport illegal immigrants if elected. “As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and crack down on human traffickers. That’s my promise to you,” she posted on X.

Who is Ruby Dhalla?

Ruby Dhalla, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Punjabi immigrants, first entered politics in 2004, being elected to the House of Commons from Brampton-Springdale. She was among the first women of Indian origin to be elected, alongside Conservative Nina Grewal. Dhalla was re-elected in 2006 and 2008 but lost her seat in 2011 and chose not to run in 2015 when the Liberals gained a majority.

Beyond her political career, Dhalla has worked as a model and is now a hotelier. She also featured in the Bollywood-inspired film Kyon? Kis Liye? and was the runner-up in the 1993 Miss India-Canada pageant.

Dhalla emphasizes her business experience, advocating for leadership from someone who has built a business from the ground up. Her campaign focuses on restoring Canada’s prominence on the world stage.
