On Saturday, the West Bengal government declared that the mass resignation of doctors from state-run hospitals is invalid and must be submitted individually in accordance with service rules.
Numerous doctors from state-run hospitals have submitted collectively signed resignation letters to the government, demanding justice for the post-graduate trainee who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. They are also expressing solidarity with junior medics who are on a hunger strike to press for their demands.
“An employee’s resignation must be submitted personally to the employer as per service rules; otherwise, it is not considered a resignation letter,” stated Alapan Bandyopadhyay, chief advisor to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during a press briefing at the state secretariat, Nabanna. He explained that the letters submitted by the doctors were simply collective signatures and did not address specific issues.
Bandyopadhyay reiterated the government’s commitment to clarify the situation amidst the confusion surrounding the mass resignations of senior doctors from various government hospitals, including R G Kar Medical College and IPGMER and SSKM Hospital.
Earlier this week, a group of senior doctors at R G Kar Medical College submitted a collectively signed “mass resignation” letter in solidarity with their protesting junior colleagues, prompting similar letters from doctors at other state-run hospitals.
Junior doctors at various government hospitals in the state are on a hunger strike demanding justice for their murdered colleague, the resignation of the state’s health secretary, and improved workplace security.
The government has stated that healthcare services in state-run hospitals remain unaffected, as senior doctors continue to perform their duties as usual. The junior doctors had previously suspended their ‘total cease work’ at state-run medical colleges and hospitals on October 4.
The mass resignations are being viewed by the government as a symbolic gesture of solidarity from senior doctors with their junior colleagues.
