Nationwide strikes and protests by junior doctors, trainees and medical students affected healthcare services in West Bengal and other parts of the country on Tuesday (August 13) as long queues of patients were seen at out-patient departments of all government-run hospitals since early morning.
Senior doctors were substituting their junior counterparts to address the rush even as agitating doctors in Kolkata set a deadline of Wednesday (August 14) for the police to complete their investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The protesters have been pressing for a magisterial probe. “The ceasework and protest will continue till our demands are met. We have been very clear about our demands. We want a judicial probe into the incident,” a protesting junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said.
Police sources said the assistant superintendent who was the first to call the victim’s family and told them she has died of suicide, has been summoned for questioning. The head of the chest department of the medical college, where the victim worked, will also be questioned.
The Incident
The semi-nude body of the woman PGT doctor, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. She was on duty on Thursday night, and her body bore multiple injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder, leading her father to allege that she was raped and murdered inside the hospital.
