Omar Abdullah Sworn In as J&K Chief Minister, Surinder Choudhary Appointed Deputy CM; Congress Left Out of Cabinet

On Wednesday, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir since it became a Union Territory in 2019. Surinder Kumar Choudhary was sworn in as Abdullah’s deputy. Javed Dar, Sakina Itoo, Javed Rana, and Satish Sharma also took the oath as part of Abdullah’s Cabinet at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Kashmir.

We Are Unhappy, Not Joining Ministry for Now: Congress

The Congress party announced it will not be joining the Jammu and Kashmir government at this time. Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, stated, “Congress has strongly demanded the restoration of statehood to J&K. The Prime Minister has repeatedly promised this in public meetings, yet statehood has not been restored. We are unhappy, and therefore, we are not joining the Ministry at the moment.” Karra added that Congress will continue to fight for the restoration of statehood.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office to Omar Abdullah and his ministers at the ceremony, which began at 11:30 am. Top Opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were present, along with JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, AAP leader Sanjay Singh, and CPI leader D Raja. Moments before taking the oath, Abdullah remarked that much remains to be done for the Union Territory.
