As the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance moved closer to securing a clear majority in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir elections, Farooq Abdullah announced that his son, Omar Abdullah, would become the next chief minister of the union territory.
“Omar Abdullah will be the chief minister,” the senior Abdullah confirmed to reporters when asked about the alliance’s CM candidate.
Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Farooq Abdullah stated, “The people have delivered their verdict, showing that the decisions made on August 5, 2019 (the abrogation of Article 370), are not acceptable to them.” He expressed gratitude to the voters, saying, “I am thankful to everyone who participated in the elections, and did so freely. I also thank God for the results.”
The former Union minister added that the new government would have significant work ahead to address the “sufferings” of the people.

Farooq Abdullah thanked the people of Jammu and Kashmir, saying, “This is the people’s mandate.” He emphasized the need to address key issues: “We must tackle unemployment, inflation, and the drug menace. Now, there will be no more Lieutenant Governor and his advisors—there will be 90 elected MLAs who will work for the people.”
Mehbooba Mufti Congratulates NC-Congress Alliance
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti congratulated the NC-Congress alliance, saying, “I believe the people wanted a stable government, and they felt the National Conference-Congress could provide that while keeping the BJP away.”
Omar Abdullah Wins Budgam Seat
National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah secured a decisive victory in the Budgam assembly seat, defeating the PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by more than 18,000 votes. Omar, who is also leading in the family stronghold of Ganderbal, received 36,010 votes in Budgam, while Mehdi garnered 17,525. During a visit to Budgam, Omar said, “The people supported us more than we had expected.”
