Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Saryu Roy has joined Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United JD(U). This move is seen as a strategic enhancement for JDU in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand. Roy’s induction into JDU took place on Sunday, with key party figures including Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Kumar Jha, Bihar ministers Ashok Choudhary and Shravan Kumar, and Jharkhand JDU’s Khiry Mahto present at the event.
Saryu Roy had met with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar multiple times in Patna, where Kumar expressed his desire for Roy to join JDU and expand its presence in Jharkhand. It is anticipated that Roy might take a leadership role within JDU in Jharkhand and merge his party, Bharatiya Janata Morcha, with JDU.
Roy’s departure from the BJP was due to not receiving a ticket during the 2019 assembly elections, in which he contested independently and defeated then-Chief Minister Raghubar Das from Jamshedpur East.
Roy is expected to contest the forthcoming assembly elections from Jamshedpur East on a JDU ticket. There is speculation that he might receive support from BJP, given the coordination between JDU and BJP at the national and state levels. This collaboration could benefit Roy in the upcoming elections.
In addition to Roy’s induction, around two dozen opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) functionaries from Samastipur also joined JDU on Sunday. Bihar Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary attributed the influx to Kumar’s policies.
Choudhary slammed the RJD for trying to take credit for the caste-based survey or increase in reservation for the backward classes, extremely backward classes, scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes.
“RJD is desperate…it was never serious about it and there never was any initiative from it when it was in power and had the opportunity. It was the sole initiative of Kumar and the decision was taken for the first time in June 2022 when Bihar had the NDA government,” he said.
