“Indian Student Pays Rs 1 Crore for Oxford PhD, Claims ‘Forced Removal’ and Betrayal”

An Indian PhD student from Tamil Nadu, Lakshmi Balakrishnan, alleges she was “forcibly transferred” to a master’s program at the University of Oxford without her consent. Lakshmi, who already holds two master’s degrees, reportedly spent nearly £100,000 (approximately Rs 1 crore) on tuition and living expenses at the prestigious university.

According to a BBC report, Lakshmi claims Oxford’s English faculty initially approved her PhD thesis proposal when she applied and during her first year. However, in her fourth year, two faculty assessors failed her, stating that her research on Shakespeare lacked PhD-level scope.

After disputing the faculty’s decision and appealing without success, she expressed her disappointment: “They forcibly removed me from the PhD program and placed me in a master’s course without my consent,” she told the publication. “I feel a deep sense of betrayal by an institution I highly respected. I already have two master’s degrees from India, and I paid £100,000 to pursue a PhD at Oxford—not another master’s.”

The University of Oxford stated that all students are informed that their “academic progress determines a successful outcome.” In a statement, the university confirmed that the appeals process for this case has concluded.

“I am the first in my family to study abroad, coming from an underprivileged background. I made immense sacrifices to study at Oxford,” Lakshmi shared. “I believe the university’s strategy is to push me through endless appeals and complaints procedures, hoping I’ll eventually give up and leave.”
