Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu, who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for a four-day visit, assured that his country would never take any action that could undermine India’s security. Despite his reputation for maintaining close ties with the Chinese administration, Muizzu emphasized that the Maldives’ relationship with China would not compromise India’s security interests.

Tensions between the Maldives and India had heightened after the Maldives requested the withdrawal of Indian troops, further exacerbated by the controversy surrounding a Maldivian minister’s mockery of Prime Minister Modi, which sparked significant outrage in India.

“Maldives would never take any action that undermines India’s security. India is a valued partner and friend, and our relationship is grounded in mutual respect and shared interests. As we strengthen cooperation with other countries across various sectors, we remain committed to ensuring that our actions do not compromise the security and stability of the region,” President Muizzu said in an interview with The Times of India.

The Maldivian president emphasized that he holds no ill will towards India and clarified that the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives was solely to prioritize the nation’s domestic interests. “Maldives and India now have a better understanding of each other’s priorities and concerns. My actions were in response to the will of the Maldivian people. The recent changes reflect our efforts to address domestic needs. Our review of past agreements is intended to ensure they align with our national interests and contribute to regional stability,” he stated.

Last year, President Muizzu rose to power championing the “India Out” campaign. However, during a recent visit to the US, he expressed his willingness to work with India. He also stated that he had taken action against the minister who mocked Prime Minister Modi. On Sunday, Muizzu met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi during his visit. This marks his second trip to India since attending Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June.
