The One Nation, One Election Bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 17, 2024. On Wednesday, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held its first meeting to discuss the proposal for simultaneous polls. The JPC, chaired by BJP MP and former Minister of State for Law, PP Chaudhary, is tasked with reviewing the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seek to synchronize elections at the national and state levels.
The survey gathered responses from 4,573 participants across 29 states and Union Territories between December 23 and December 31, 2024.
The majority of respondents in the survey were Hindus (86.5%), followed by Muslims. As the fieldwork was primarily conducted in cities and towns, the sample was predominantly urban (66.1%), except in the Northeast, where a larger rural sample was surveyed.
Male respondents accounted for 73.7% of the sample, while females made up 26.3%. However, the Northeast region featured a more significant proportion of female participants. Most respondents (81.7%) were aged between 26 and 55 years.
The survey also highlighted widespread support for the proposal to hold simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, with 80.1% of respondents in favor of the move.
Nearly half of the respondents expressed confidence that voters would be able to differentiate between candidates and parties at the national and state levels. Additionally, 55.9% believe that simultaneous voting for national and state elections will not lead to confusion among voters.
The One Nation, One Election proposal seeks to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, aiming to reduce the frequency of polls and cut down on expenses. Proponents argue that this move would minimize disruptions caused by frequent election cycles. However, the Opposition has raised concerns about logistical challenges and the potential risks of power centralization.
