‘Such A Mistake Is Not Right’ : Saina Nehwal Wants Vinesh Phogat To Take The ‘Blame’ For Disqualification

Team India were stunned when wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who had been on the verge of becoming the nation’s first female wrestler to reach an Olympic final after defeating World and Olympic 50kg champion Yui Susaki on Tuesday night, was disqualified for being overweight before her final match against the USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt on Wednesday (August 7, 2024).During this morning’s weigh-in, Vinesh was discovered to be over the weight limit by precisely 100 grams.

2012 London Olympics Bronze medallist, Saina Nehwal was disappointed with how things panned out for the wrestler and also asserted that it was a mistake from Vinesh’s part as well and she should be accountable to it.

“It is not like she is playing her first Olympics, it’s her third Olympics. As an athletes she must know the rules. If there has been a mistake, I don’t know how it happened. At such a big stage, I have not heard any such thing about any other wrestler, that they have been disqualified due to being overweight. She is an experienced athlete. Somewhere there has been a mistake on Vinesh’s part too. She should take the blame too. Before such a big match, such a mistake is not right”, the Badminton ace told NDTV.

Nehwal remarked that mistakes like this rarely occur at such a high level of competition, raising questions about how it happened. She also pointed out that Vinesh Phogat has a large team of coaches, physios, and trainers, all of whom must be feeling terrible. Even though the star shuttler is unsure about the specific rules and regulations in wrestling, the 34-year old felt really bad as a fellow athlete.

“I understand what she and her coaches must be going through. They should answer now. May be by mistake something happened. Her coaches were crying after her victory. They should be in a better position to answer about what exactly happened”, Nehwal further told.

UWW’s Article-11 on weigh-ins states that for all competitions, the weigh-in takes place each morning for the relevant weight category and lasts 30 minutes, including medical control. On the second morning of the competition, only wrestlers participating in the repechages and finals are required to attend the weigh-in, which lasts 15 minutes.

It was stated that the only acceptable attire for the weigh-in is the singlet, and no weight tolerance will be permitted for this garment. During the entire weigh-in period, wrestlers are allowed to step on the scale as many times as they wish, one at a time. If an athlete misses or fails the weigh-in, whether it is the first or second weigh-in, they will be disqualified from the competition and placed at the bottom of the ranking without a position.
