Vinesh Phogat faced one of the biggest heartbreaks for India in the history of the Olympics when she was disqualified from the gold medal bout of the women’s 50kg category at Paris 2024 for being just 100g overweight. She missed out on a historic first silver or gold medal, and even lost her appeal to reverse the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Now 47 days after her disqualification, the star wrestler has been sent a notice by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
Why Did NADA Send Notice To Vinesh Phogat?
On September 25, NADA sent a notice to Vinesh Phogat for a whereabouts failure. She was not present in her house when a Dope Control Officer went there to collect samples for a doping test. Hence, she has been summoned by the anti-doping agency to explain why she was not available for her dope test.
“You are hereby given a formal notice to notify you about apparent failure to comply with the whereabouts requirements of the ADR, and to invite you to make any comments before we come to a final decision on the matter,” the NADA notice read.
“A Dope Control Officer (DCO) was sent to test you on that dav at that time and place. However, he was unable to locate you for testing as you were not available at the given location,” it further went on to say
Why Did Vinesh Phogat Miss Her Dope Test?
After retiring from wrestling post her Paris Olympics heartbreak, Vinesh Phogat received a hero’s welcome in India and in village in Haryana. She also formally joined the Indian National Congress party along with Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia. She has been declared as the candidate for the Julana constituency for the upcoming Haryana Assembly Elections. Vinesh might have missed the dope test since she is busy campaigning fo the elections.
Can Vinesh Phogat Be Punished By NADA?
According to the rules, one whereabouts failure does not lead to an athlete being punished. If an athete commits this offence three times in the period of 12 months, then only can NADA impose a punishment on him/her. Hence, Vinesh Phgat, is not eligible to be punished by NADA as of now.
