New Zealand defeated India by 25 runs on the fourth day of the third and final Test at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, clinching the series 3-0.
This marks India’s first-ever whitewash in a series consisting of three or more matches. The last time India faced such a defeat at home was in 2000, when they were beaten 2-0 by South Africa.
New Zealand secured a historic victory in their opening match in Bengaluru, winning by eight wickets, marking their first Test triumph in India in 36 years. They clinched the series in Pune with a commanding 113-run win.
After bowling out New Zealand for 174 in the first session, India required 147 runs for a consolation victory. However, the home team’s batting lineup crumbled against the spin of Ajaz Patel, who had already taken five wickets in the first innings and finished the match with a total of 11.
Fast bowler Matt Henry struck early, dismissing Rohit Sharma in the third over as the captain mis-hit a catch to Glenn Phillips at midwicket for just 11 runs.
Mumbai-born Ajaz then bowled Shubman Gill and sent Virat Kohli back to the pavilion for one, caught at slip by Daryl Mitchell, silencing the home crowd.
The wickets continued to fall as Phillips trapped Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for five, and just two balls later, Sarfaraz Khan was caught in the deep off Ajaz, leaving India in dire straits at 29-5.
Rishabh Pant fought valiantly, scoring 64 off 57 balls before a controversial dismissal. Ravichandran Ashwin fell to Phillips, and Akash Deep followed suit on the very next delivery. Ajaz sealed the win by cleaning up Washington Sundar.
Earlier in the innings, Will Young (51), Glenn Phillips (26), Devon Conway (22), and Daryl Mitchell (21) made crucial contributions on a challenging pitch at Wankhede Stadium.
Ravindra Jadeja delivered an impressive performance, taking 5 wickets for 55 runs, while fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin contributed with 3 for 63 for India.
New Zealand lost Ajaz Patel early on day three at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, with Jadeja claiming his wicket for just eight runs. The left-handed Patel was caught at deep mid-wicket after attempting a slog sweep, marking Jadeja’s match total at 11 wickets, having also taken five in New Zealand’s first innings.
India is striving to avoid a 3-0 series sweep after New Zealand won the first two Tests, marking their first Test series victory in India.
Will Young was the top scorer for New Zealand with 51 runs on a pitch that has sharply turned since the first day. In response to New Zealand’s 235, Shubman Gill’s 90 helped India secure a narrow 28-run lead with a total of 263 runs in their first innings.
