Railway stations in India often experience heavy footfall, especially during holidays and festivals, as many people visit to see off or receive their relatives. The new rule is expected to ease congestion and ensure smoother passenger movement. It will soon be implemented at key stations in major cities.

The restriction will be enforced at 60 of the busiest railway stations, including New Delhi Railway Station (Delhi), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Mumbai), Howrah Junction (Kolkata), Chennai Central (Chennai), and Bengaluru City Railway Station (Bengaluru).

Additional stations may be included based on crowd management requirements.

While the policy may cause temporary inconvenience, officials believe it will ultimately enhance the travel experience. Passengers are advised to book tickets in advance and ensure they have a confirmed reservation before arriving at the station.

This initiative is especially crucial during peak seasons, as it aims to manage platform congestion by restricting access to ticketed passengers. The decision follows a meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, where senior railway officials highlighted the need for effective crowd control measures at high-traffic stations.
