“A tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory parade in Bengaluru claimed the lives of eleven people and left several others injured. The celebration, meant to honor RCB’s historic first IPL title, descended into chaos amid severe overcrowding and inadequate crowd management. Eyewitnesses and video footage revealed a disturbing lack of emergency exits, medical assistance, and coordination between the organizers and local authorities.”
Police File FIR as Arrests and Resignations Rock RCB Parade Fallout
The Bengaluru Police have registered an FIR against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the event management company DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in connection with the tragic stampede. On Friday, Nikhil Sosale—RCB’s head of marketing and a Diageo employee—was arrested.
Amid growing public and political pressure, KSCA Secretary A. Shankar and Treasurer E.S. Jairam tendered their resignations on Saturday. Meanwhile, several families of the victims have approached the courts, seeking accountability and financial compensation.
BCCI Distances Itself, Calls Chinnaswamy Tragedy a Franchise Event
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory parade was a franchise-organised event, not coordinated by the board. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia called it an “unfortunate incident” and added, “At some stage, BCCI will have to do something. We cannot be a silent spectator.”
While reiterating that the parade was a private affair, Saikia emphasized the board’s broader responsibility: “We at the BCCI are responsible for cricket in India, and we will try to ensure such incidents do not recur in future.”
The IPL, BCCI’s most valuable commercial property, now finds itself at the center of a reputational crisis. Calls for accountability are growing louder, but any punitive action against RCB could come with significant legal and financial consequences.
RCB Ban Speculation Grows Amid Probe
As the Karnataka government’s investigation progresses, rumors of a possible RCB ban for the IPL 2026 season have begun circulating on social media. While no official action has been taken yet, the gravity of the incident—marked by the loss of 11 lives—has intensified scrutiny.
Franchise bans are not unprecedented in the IPL. In 2015, both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals faced temporary suspensions following a spot-fixing scandal. However, the current case involves public safety, not corruption, and any BCCI move will hinge on the outcome of the state’s investigation.
If gross negligence is legally established, pressure on BCCI to act could escalate.
No BCCI Action Yet as Investigation Continues
As of now, the BCCI has not announced any disciplinary measures against RCB. The board appears to be awaiting the official findings from the state probe before deciding on any course of action.
